Raising Awareness on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action.

The National Transformational Leadership Institute at the University of Juba in partnership with Urgent Action Fund-Africa in Nairobi conducted a two weeks’ awareness-raising training for women leaders on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BPFA) in Juba from 22nd June to 4th July 2020. Participants were drawn from the Parliament, Civil Service, Civil Society, National Organizations, Faith-Based Organizations and the Private Sector. The overall objective of the training was to raise awareness on the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action +25. The training covered a variety of topics which included the historical perspective of the BPFA, Linkages of BPFA with national efforts in the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and highlights of the country reports on implementation of the BPFA.

The participant’s knowledge was deepened on the various reviews BPFA has undergone since 1995. Participants also gained a deeper understanding on how BPFA is a frame work by which states can be held accountable in promoting women’s rights. BPFA has been mainstreamed in many policies and legal frameworks and this has enabled South Sudan to gauge implementation in the twelve (12) critical areas and how it relates to international instruments in promoting women’s rights.
